1. Choose seed species

2. Enter an estimated seeding rate and area

Seeding rates can vary depending on seed size, seeding objectives, application method, site conditions and whether seeding a single species or a mixture. An estimated seeding rate of between 10-20 lbs/ac is a good place to start for many applications. The rate can be re-adjusted after reviewing the CALC report.  If you know the seeding area size it be entered directly, or it can be input from a spatial file, or the map tool in Seeding Options.

3. Choose mixture by composition or weight

Specify whether the seed mixture will be determined by weight or composition (by seed count). If you are designing a mixture, you may want to specify composition (by seed count). If you have a predifined mix from a seed company based on weight, you can specify the mix and the report will provide the mix percentages by composition (seed count).

4. Estimate % values for each species

For each seed species, enter a value for "Percent by weight" (or by composition, if selected). Make sure your percents sum to 100 (see running total at bottom of form). You can also change seeds per kg to match your particular seed-lot or variety.

5. Enter PLS % and/or Germination $ [OPTIONAL]

You can also set additional variables, like Pure live seed (PLS percentage), Germination rate and Price, to help you adjust the seeding rate and compare the quality of different seed-lots. PLS and Germination rate are obtained from the Seed Analysis Certificate.

6. Add a custom species [OPTIONAL]

If you would like to include species that are not in the database, you can add a custom species at this stage

7. Click "Calculate"

8. Review results

Review the results and experiment with your settings - re-calculate as required considering:

  • seeding objectives (e.g., erosion control seeding on slope will likely require a higher seeding rate to achieve suitable cover as quickly as possible)
  • the site conditions including the amount of disturbance and exposed mineral soil
  • application method - broadcast methods may require increased seeding rates (50-100%) especially if there is no post-seeding treatment like harrowing or packing
  • whether seeding a single species or a mixture
  • recommended PLS  seeding densities - seeds per square meter or seeds per square foot in the report can be compared to recommended single species seeding densities (PLS/square meter), e.g., alfalfa (175-550 ), meadow brome (175-350), timothy (650-1000), slender wheatgrass (130-260)
